These are not transcriptions of the directories because they have been edited to a large degree. Entries such as those for farmers, local publications etc. have mostly been left out, and some of the lengthier trade descriptions have been shortened unless of particular interest or quirkiness. This is usually indicated by the addition of etc. after a brief description. Pages on local government officials and town history may be added later. There are variations in spelling between and sometimes within directories, and some other mistakes such as road or street names. These have not been altered and to distinguish them they are marked (sic) to indicate that they are not typo errrors by me. There will of couse be some of those as well. As I hope this will be an ongoing, long term project, I may later make additional notes alongside original entries as time allows. Any comments by me will be identified as such. This is not a serious historical site, so, as usual, for complete accuracy consult the original sources which are held in various libraries. Some are also for sale on CD. A.H. August 2010
